My Diary

Post ID:

Growing up in a household of hobbyists is always fun.  Having a dad who is an avid fisherman, gardener, chef and bowler and a mum who is an accomplished singer, pianist and reader paves the way for you to become a hobbyist too.  I thought it would be useful to pull together a list of some of the best hobbies that the whole family can enjoy together.

Get ready to collect!

As a child, I have extremely fond memories of going to antique fairs and car boot sales with my mum.  She was a big fan of collecting old, vintage photographs.  Even though she was collecting something different, we still loved scouting out the latest additions to both of our collections.

You will be pleased to know that many collecting hobbies can also serve as fodder for at-home education.  Both coins and stamps can help spark discussions around maths, geography and history. Plus, collecting rocks and shells are a great way to nurture an interest in oceanography and geology.

 Go gardening!

I’m sure you’ll agree that there is a lot of fun to be had down in the garden.  Kids certainly love to get a little messy and what better way to connect with the earth and watch your very own plants and seeds grow!  Gardening is a wonderful experience that children will no doubt love.  With gardening, children can learn about where food comes from and also develop an appreciation for the work it takes to put dinner on the family table every night.

Make music together!

Regardless of whether or not you choose to learn how to play a specific instrument, it’s always fun to rock out with your family members!  Why don’t you try learning as a family? You may be surprised to hear this, but there are a number of music classes designed with the family in mind!

Get out and explore nature!

No matter where you live, you’ll easily be able to find one or two places where you can get out and enjoy nature.  Be It bird watching, hiking, discovering the local plant life or simply a breath of fresh air, getting out in nature as a family can be just what the doctor ordered.  Instead of staying cooped up inside playing on games all day, why not plan in a weekly stroll to get rid of any cobwebs and enjoy nature.

Become a family of photographers

You may not realise it, but even the smallest member of your family can help take a picture.  Some of the best photos come from young children as they snap random shots of a normal day.  Photography is a great way to teach children about the world in a fun and approachable way.  Why not create a family photography competition?  It’s a great way to get the children out of the house and exploring nature together!

Try out a new sport

Exercise! The dreaded word children seem to hate.  However, swimming, bike riding and horseback riding are all family friendly activities you can enjoy together. Whether your child chooses to try out this activity for themselves or simply goes along for the ride, there is always a huge range of activities families can enjoy together.

Building models as a family

We can all agree that children love playing with trains.  Building model trains, planes and automobiles is a great way to bond as a family.  Plus, with online brands like ModelSpace, you will be able to make sure children of all ages can watch he fruits of their labour grow and evolve over time.

Scrapbooking!

This is a great way to share memories while also making new ones in the process.  Children love to hear stories about themselves and their family and scrapbooking gives you the ability to weave stories together.  We can’t think of a better way to bring a family together.
